The Emotional Journey

How does travel feel?

Booking your flights, packing your stuff, checking-in at the airport… you’re probably aware that you go through different phases when making a trip.
But did you notice that your state of mind also takes its own particular journey? Indeed, travel is personally relevant; it is memorable, it shapes our thinking, it inspires and it is transformative. It connects with our emotions… and makes them travel too.

You won’t be surprised to know that Joy is one of the most frequent emotions in the travel experience… but did you know that your emotional journey is much broader than that? Actually, up to 15 different feelings and emotions are present during the travel experience.

Return

Nothing lasts forever… and it’s time to go home. At this moment, most travellers still have strong levels of Joy, but at a lower intensity than during the trip. In fact, at this stage new emotions appear for the first time - Sadness and Melancholy - because a memorable experience comes to an end. In parallel, Satisfaction reaches its highest level and Relaxation is also quite strongly present. Some travellers also feel Tiredness.

EMOTIONS:
Joy, Sadness, Melancholy, Satisfaction, Relaxation, Tiredness

Travel and Stay

The day has finally come! Before heading to the airport, there are still strong doses of Stress and Anxiety. Some might feel a hint of Fear when it comes to long-haul trips, but this will soon disappear upon arrival at the destination. After that Joy, Relaxation and Pleasure reach their highest levels.

Day before

We are almost there! It is now time for the final checks: travel documents? Ready. Luggage? well… almost. At this stage, Joy and Enthusiasm are strong. Post-booking

Flights and hotels are booked, we’re all set! In this moment, Eagerness and Excitement are restored as the trip feels closer. Therefore, Impatience is boosted to its highest levels: can’t wait to get on the plane! In parallel, while Stress drops dramatically, Calmness reaches a higher intensity with the realisation that we just got past one of the most crucial moments of the travel experience.

EMOTIONS:
Eagerness, Excitement, Impatience, Stress, Calmness

Booking

We are now ready to book our trip! Just like in the previous phases, Enthusiasm and Excitement are still dominant, but at a much lower intensity than before as other feelings start to show up; Anxiety lives together with Satisfaction. In the first case, as a result of the important responsibilities attached to this stage, such as making a payment or choosing the right flight and hotel combinations. In the second case, because the booking stage is the materialization of a dream: the trip is actually happening!

EMOTIONS:
Enthusiasm, Excitement, Anxiety, Satisfaction

Planning

We have a destination, it is now time to plan details such as dates, itinerary or budget. At this stage, although Excitement and Vigour increase, travellers start being Less Relaxed and feeling more Stressed as the planning stage reveals all the pending preparation work needed. This leads to an increase in Impatience as travellers are willing to move on to the next phase.

EMOTIONS:
Excitement, Vigour, Less Relaxed, Stressed, Impatience

Inspiration

Where to travel next? At this stage, Anticipation and Enthusiasm are the most common emotions. Travellers show an Energetic interest and the highest level of Eagerness of the whole travel experience. Once the destination is chosen, Joy and Satisfaction dominate.
